We are excited to introduce the world’s first complete set of rare-earth-doped glass samples, exclusively available from smart-elements.

This unique collection comprises 16 individual phosphate-glass ingots, each doped with 17 mol% of the corresponding rare-earth oxide and formulated with potassium oxide. Together, the samples provide a striking visual comparison of the characteristic colors, optical properties, and magnetic behavior associated with the rare-earth elements.

The complete set is supplied in a specially designed transparent acrylic display stand. Each glass ingot is securely positioned in its designated opening and identified with the corresponding element symbol. The samples protrude approximately 8 mm from the surface, allowing their thickness, transparency, and color to be clearly observed from different angles. The clear acrylic construction provides an elegant, unobtrusive presentation suitable for laboratories, educational institutions, museums, offices, and private collections.

Several glasses, including those doped with erbium, terbium, gadolinium, and dysprosium, exhibit noticeable magnetic or paramagnetic behavior. These rare-earth ions possess comparatively large magnetic moments, making the samples particularly interesting for demonstrations and investigations involving magnetism.

Under ultraviolet excitation, some samples display remarkable fluorescence. Europium- and terbium-doped glasses produce especially intense emissions, while glasses containing samarium, thulium, and dysprosium show weaker fluorescence because of concentration-related optical quenching and competing non-radiative processes.

Each sample is therefore more than a decorative object. The collection demonstrates the interaction between chemical composition, visible absorption, fluorescence, transparency, and magnetism within a consistent glass matrix. It provides a compact and visually compelling introduction to the distinctive properties of the rare-earth elements.

This complete set is suitable for:

  • scientific and educational demonstrations
  • spectroscopy and fluorescence experiments
  • magnetism demonstrations
  • museum and institutional displays
  • advanced material collections
  • collectors of elements and unusual glasses

The combination of all 16 samples with the custom-made acrylic display stand makes this an exceptionally rare collection and, to our knowledge, the only complete set of its kind commercially available.

We can also manufacture larger rare-earth-doped glass specimens and cast rods with diameters of several centimetres and lengths of up to approximately 50 mm. Custom compositions and dimensions may be available on request.

Beautiful optical glass beads doped with metal ions.

Elaborately and individually manufactured by us in the laboratory from highly pure reagents.
Gorgeous beads showing the typical colors of different metal ions in different oxidation states.

They can be used for save demonstration of different colors of the metal compounds or just for collecting.
