Oganesson<\/b>\u00a0is a\u00a0synthetic<\/a>\u00a0chemical element<\/a>\u00a0with the\u00a0symbol<\/a>\u00a0Og<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0atomic number<\/a>\u00a0118. It was first synthesized in 2002 at the\u00a0Joint Institute for Nuclear Research<\/a>\u00a0(JINR) in\u00a0Dubna<\/a>, near\u00a0Moscow<\/a>, Russia, by a joint team of Russian and American scientists. In December 2015, it was recognized as one of four new elements by the\u00a0Joint Working Party<\/a>\u00a0of the international scientific bodies\u00a0IUPAC<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0IUPAP<\/a>. It was formally named on 28 November 2016.[18]<\/a><\/sup>[19]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The name is in line with the tradition of honoring a scientist, in this case the nuclear physicist\u00a0Yuri Oganessian<\/a>, who has played a leading role in the discovery of the heaviest elements in the periodic table. It is one of only two elements named after a person who was alive at the time of naming, the other being\u00a0seaborgium<\/a>, and the only element whose namesake is alive today.<\/sup><\/p>\n Oganesson has the highest atomic number and highest\u00a0atomic mass<\/a>\u00a0of all known elements. The\u00a0radioactive<\/a>\u00a0oganesson atom is very unstable, and since 2005, only five (possibly six) atoms of the isotope\u00a0294<\/sup>Og<\/a>\u00a0have been detected.[21]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Although this allowed very little experimental characterization of its properties and possible\u00a0compounds<\/a>, theoretical calculations have resulted in many predictions, including some surprising ones. For example, although oganesson is a member of\u00a0group 18<\/a>\u00a0(the\u00a0noble gases<\/a>) \u2013 the first synthetic element to be so \u2013 it may be significantly reactive, unlike all the other elements of that group.[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It was formerly thought to be a gas under\u00a0normal conditions<\/a>\u00a0but is now predicted to be a\u00a0solid<\/a>\u00a0due to\u00a0relativistic effects<\/a>.<\/sup>\u00a0On the\u00a0periodic table<\/a>\u00a0of the elements it is a\u00a0p-block<\/a>\u00a0element and the last one of\u00a0period
