It was first synthesized in 2003 by a joint team of Russian and American scientists at the\u00a0<a title=\"Joint Institute for Nuclear Research\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joint_Institute_for_Nuclear_Research\">Joint Institute for Nuclear Research<\/a>\u00a0(JINR) in\u00a0<a title=\"Dubna\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dubna\">Dubna<\/a>, Russia. In December 2015, it was recognized as one of four new elements by the\u00a0<a title=\"IUPAC\/IUPAP Joint Working Party\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IUPAC\/IUPAP_Joint_Working_Party\">Joint Working Party<\/a>\u00a0of international scientific bodies\u00a0<a title=\"International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Union_of_Pure_and_Applied_Chemistry\">IUPAC<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"International Union of Pure and Applied Physics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Union_of_Pure_and_Applied_Physics\">IUPAP<\/a>. On 28 November 2016, it was officially named after the\u00a0<a title=\"Moscow Oblast\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moscow_Oblast\">Moscow Oblast<\/a>, in which the JINR is situated.<sup id=\"cite_ref-IUPAC-20161130_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-IUPAC-June2016_8-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Moscovium is an extremely\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Radioactive\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radioactive\">radioactive<\/a>\u00a0element: its most stable known isotope, moscovium-290, has a\u00a0<a title=\"Half-life\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Half-life\">half-life<\/a>\u00a0of only 0.65\u00a0seconds.<sup id=\"cite_ref-shesummary_9-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0In the\u00a0<a title=\"Periodic table\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Periodic_table\">periodic table<\/a>, it is a\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"P-block\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/P-block\">p-block<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Transactinide element\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transactinide_element\">transactinide element<\/a>. It is a member of the\u00a0<a title=\"Period 7 element\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Period_7_element\">7th period<\/a>\u00a0and is placed in group 15 as the heaviest\u00a0<a title=\"Pnictogen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pnictogen\">pnictogen<\/a>, although it has not been confirmed to behave as a heavier\u00a0<a title=\"Homology (chemistry)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homology_(chemistry)\">homologue<\/a>\u00a0of the pnictogen bismuth. Moscovium is calculated to have some properties similar to its lighter homologues,\u00a0<a title=\"Stickstoff\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nitrogen\">nitrogen<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Phosphor\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phosphorus\">phosphorus<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Arsen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arsenic\">arsenic<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Antimon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antimony\">antimony<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Bismut\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bismuth\">bismuth<\/a>, and to be a\u00a0<a title=\"Post-transition metal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Post-transition_metal\">post-transition metal<\/a>, although it should also show several major differences from them. In particular, moscovium should also have significant similarities to\u00a0<a title=\"Thallium\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thallium\">thallium<\/a>, as both have one rather loosely bound electron outside a quasi-closed\u00a0<a title=\"Electron shell\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electron_shell\">shell<\/a>.
