Seaborgium\u00a0is a\u00a0synthetic\u00a0chemical element\u00a0with the\u00a0symbol\u00a0Sg\u00a0and\u00a0atomic number\u00a0106. It is named after the American\u00a0nuclear chemist\u00a0Glenn T. Seaborg. As a\u00a0synthetic element, it can be created in a laboratory but is not found in nature. It is also\u00a0radioactive; the most stable known\u00a0isotope,\u00a0269Sg, has a\u00a0half-life\u00a0of approximately 14\u00a0minutes.<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0periodic table\u00a0of the elements, it is a\u00a0d-block\u00a0transactinide element. It is a member of the\u00a07th period\u00a0and belongs to the\u00a0group 6 elements\u00a0as the fourth member of the 6d series of\u00a0transition metals. Chemistry experiments have confirmed that seaborgium behaves as the heavier\u00a0homologue\u00a0to\u00a0tungsten\u00a0in group 6. The chemical properties of seaborgium are characterized only partly, but they compare well with the chemistry of the other group 6 elements.<\/p>\n

In 1974, a few atoms of seaborgium were produced in laboratories in the\u00a0Soviet Union\u00a0and in the United States. The priority of the discovery and therefore the\u00a0naming of the element was disputed\u00a0between Soviet and American scientists, and it was not until 1997 that\u00a0International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry\u00a0(IUPAC) established seaborgium as the official name for the element. It is one of only two elements named after a living person at the time of naming, the other being\u00a0oganesson, element 118.<\/p>\n
